You can be in the best or worst industry, at the highest or lowest level of position, making the most or least of anyone you know and BE HAPPY. You can also be miserable. It’s a choice you make every day.
When your feet hit the ground and you finally open your 10,000 ton eyelids, decide. Do you want to see the ‘good’ or the ‘bad?’ How do you want to take life, moment by moment?
August 8 is National Happiness Happens Day and we believe it can only ‘happen’ by choice.
“Turnover is one of the most costly hidden expenses a business can incur. Creating a culture that promotes a ‘happy’ workplace is fundamental to business success.” said Greg Stutz, Chief Operating Officer at Focus HR, Inc. “Too often we see employers equate more pay or richer benefits with employee retention, but it turns out in countless surveys of employees, these items commonly rank well down on the list of what keeps employees happy and engaged. Empowering and challenging employees in a supportive work environment is perhaps the most important and easiest step to take in creating a ‘happy’ workplace.”
According to the 2017 World Happiness Report, people in Norway are the planet’s most joyful. Norwegians cite caring, freedom, generosity, honesty, health, income, and good governance for helping create their smiles. All factors we crave, in the workplace and at home.
The World Happiness Report also says people in China are no happier than 25-years ago, that Africa is struggling, and that happiness has fallen in America (from a ranking of third in 2007 to 19th in 2016.)
There’s an entire chapter of the report focused on employment, so feel free to click here and read about it. It basically focuses on the emotional impact of unemployment, implying that if you’re lucky enough to have a job, you should be happy!
Remember, in some of her worst days, even Anne Frank found happiness while hiding in a cramped annex from the Nazis.
March 7, 1944 she wrote in her now-famous diary, “I’ve found that there is always some beauty left-in nature, sunshine, freedom, in yourself; these can all help you. Look at these things, then you find yourself again, and God, and then you regain your balance. And whoever is happy will make others happy too…”
Well written, Anne Frank… well written!
More about Happiness Happens Day: The Secret Society of Happy People created “Admit You’re Happy Day” in 1999 to recognize and express happiness. August 8 was chosen because it is the anniversary of the first membership in 1998.
