The Team-Building ‘Business’ of Donating Blood
Focus HR, Inc. got its start in 2003 and, like other companies, it has blended into a ‘mixed bag’ of manpower. Some of us were here on ‘Day One.’ Others are brand new to the business, but we all need to bond. It’s a critical need.
We want to be able to laugh and cry together, relate to each other on a personal level, and be on the ‘same page.’ What better way to feel like a team than to offer our arms at a local blood drive, right?
Tucsonan, Lizzie Bell was born with Diamond-Blackfan Anemia, and she has been grabbing local headlines for many years. No doubt, you’ve heard her story. She’s seen dramatic improvements since her 2013 bone marrow transplant and, like always, Lizzie wants to keep giving back.
Lizzie and her family are hosting a ‘Team Lizzie Bell’ blood drive Wednesday, August 30 and close to a dozen FOCUS employees have signed up to help save lives.
“It really speaks to the culture we’re working to create,” said Greg Stutz, Chief Operations Office of Focus HR, Inc. “Our staff, despite some individual’s desperate fear of needles, is willing to step up to the plate and help out a great cause.”
According to the American Red Cross, there is a critical need for donations by every summer’s end. Every August regular donors drop off and don’t make their ‘pint appointments.’
“To fully meet the needs of hospital patients in the coming days and weeks, donations are urgently needed from new and current donors,” wrote the American Red Cross. “Those who donated blood earlier this summer may be eligible to donate again. Blood can be safely donated every 56 days, and Power Red cells can be donated every 112 days.”
Focus Facts to consider:
- Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood.
- Approximately 36,000 units of red blood cells are needed every day in the U.S.
- Nearly 7,000 units of platelets and 10,000 units of plasma are needed daily in the U.S.
- Nearly 21 million blood components are transfused each year in the U.S.
- The average red blood cell transfusion is approximately 3 pints.
